The Spanish root word is cuarenta, meaning ‘forty.’

A quarantine period used to be for forty days.

This is no longer a widely recognized word in the Philippines. Most Filipinos simply use the English word quarantine.

In March 2020, “Community Quarantine” became the government’s term for the lockdown of Metro Manila due to the threat of COVID-19.

Many Filipinos are now using the term kwarantina.

kuwárenténas: pagkakabukod mula sa nakahahawang sakit

Tinatawag itong kuwarentenas dahil noong unang panahon, ang mga tao ay apatnapung araw (kuwarenta / 40) na inihihiwalay o ibinubuklod kapag napaghihinalaang maaaring nagdadala ng sakit.

Ipaliwanag ang mga koneksyon ng usaping kwarantina sa mga prediksyon ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas.
