DYAHE

spelling variations: diyahe, jyahe, dyahi, jahe, dyahi, diahe, jahi

dyahe: embarrassingly awkward

This slang term is derived from the Tagalog word hiya (shame, shyness). The syllables in the word were transposed to “yahi” and then had the “d” sound added in front.

The standard Tagalog term would be nakakahiya (shameful, embarrassing).

Forming slang words by transposing syllables and then slightly altering the vowels and consonants is very commonly done by Filipinos.

  1. The word dyahe also refers to an unconfortable experience. Example: Ay nako pare, dyahe talaga yung mabagal na pila sa terminal.
