PARIHUNIG

Assonance is a resemblance in the sounds of words or syllables either between their vowels or between their consonants. The assonance between consonants is generally called consonance in American usage.

In poetry, the repetition of the sound of a vowel or diphthong in nonrhyming stressed syllables near enough to each other for the echo to be discernible (e.g., penitence, reticence ).
