Tagalog Words for Halloween

In the Philippines, the first two days of November are All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, respectively. These are known as the Undas season, when Filipinos go back to their hometowns to visit and clean the graves of their departed family members.

Due to Western influence regarding Halloween, the date of October 31 is now more likely to be considered a non-working holiday devoted to visiting one’s departed relatives than is November 2, much to the chagrin of Catholic church officials.

Sa panahon ng Undas, ang mga sumusunod ay ipinagbabawal sa Manila North Cemetery:

  • Gitara
  • Alagang Hayop
  • Sigarilyo
  • Baraha
  • Pintura at tiner
  • Posporo, layter at anumang maaaring magpaapoy na likido
  • Matatalas na bagay gaya ng tinidor… kahit mga kasangkapan na ginagamit sa hardin
