SINAKULO

Now considered standard spelling: senakulo

Sinakulo is a play depicting the life and sufferings of Jesus Christ.

The word is derived from the Spanish cenáculo, meaning “cenacle,” which is the place where Jesus Christ celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples.

The Cenacle, also known as the “Upper Room”, is a room in Jerusalem traditionally held to be the site of The Last Supper. The word is a derivative of the Latin word cenō, which means dinner.

PAROL

This word is from the Spanish farol (meaning: “lantern”).

As early as August, the Christmas stars begin to appear in the starmakers’ shops. Because they have to make so many Christmas lanterns, the starmakers begin their work early.

Hanging the Christmas lantern in the shape of a star is an old Filipino tradition. The lantern recalls the bright star that guided the three wise men to the child Jesus and his mother.
