Toknéneng is made by deep-frying hard-boiled eggs that have first been enveloped with orange-colored batter. The eggs used are chicken or duck eggs.

A popular variation on toknéneng is kwék-kwek, which uses quail eggs. It is common for Filipinos to use the terms toknéneng and kwék-kwek interchangeably.
