In the egotistical power struggle for determining the direction of language development in the country, the current leadership of the Philippine Language Commission has stated that they prefer the standard Filipino spelling to be peón. Most Filipinos, however, are widely using the spelling piyon.
A famous poem by Lamberto Antonio is titled “Sa Gabi ng Isang Piyon,” which has also been translated into English as “Night of a Construction Worker.”
