This is a fairly obscure Tagalog word.

This is actually more than just chewing. When you eat fresh sugar cane, you chew off a chunk, chew the tough fibers in your mouth, and suck the juice from the fibers while they are still in your mouth. (The chewing action releases the juice from the fibers, which are almost completely inedible and indigestible.)
That is why in some dictionaries, you can see the definition given as “suck.”
You can understand this better in the line “Para kang pinangos na tubó, na pagkatapos ay iniluwa” You were like sugarcane that was chewed and had its juices (the best part of the sugarcane) sucked out, then spat out.
