The word “march” also refers to a forced, long-distance walk or movement of a large group of people, typically under harsh and inhumane conditions. Specifically, the Bataan Death March was a notorious event during World War II, where thousands of American and Filipino prisoners of war were forced to march approximately 65 miles (105 kilometers) from Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines to a prison camp. The march was characterized by extreme cruelty, with many prisoners suffering from dehydration, exhaustion, and abuse, leading to a high number of deaths.
