Jose Zulueta

Filipino historiographer.

Jose Zulueta (1876-1904) started his professional life as a journalist by establishing a Spanish-language newspaper in Manila. La Union lasted only for a few issues, after which the American military authorities suppressed it for being subversive.

In 1903, Zulueta became a curator and was charged with collecting art and literary artifacts for the Philippine exhibit at the St. Louis World’s Fair. As a historiographer, he advocated for the indigenous element (elemento indígena) in Philippine history and favored rewriting history to give primacy to native works.

In his foreign travels, he collected rare Philippine artifacts that were later purchased by the government to form the Filipiniana section in the Philippine National Library.
