These days in the United States, the word Hispanic refers to people from or with roots in Latin America, particularly Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and nearby countries that have Spanish as a primary national language.

Every few years, the word Hispanic and Latino (even Latin and plain Spanish) fall in and out of favor depending on which strain of liberal political correctness is in vogue.

Make sure to check with your liberal American friends before using any term that can be considered “racial” in the United States. The backlash from “ignorant” misuse particularly by Filipinos who have been comfortably using their own brand of English without fear of the PC police can be severe. You can be labeled as a racist for the rest of your life if you use even one single politically incorrect term. It is best to just keep quiet or refrain from using ethnically descriptive terms.
