Bangsamoro is a proposed autonomous region within the Philippines.
As a people, the Bangsamoros or Moros are Muslims within the ethnic indigenous tribes in Southeast Asia.
The Philippine area’s official name is the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
The Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro was a preliminary peace agreement signed in Manila in October 2012. The agreement called for the creation of an autonomous political entity named Bangsamoro, replacing the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) which was described by President Benigno Aquino III as “a failed experiment.”
Bangsamoro is intended to supersede the ARMM. The new political entity seeks to bring closure to the 17-year peace process between the Philippine government and the Moro people in the Mindanao.
The Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) shall go into effect upon ratification by selected areas of Muslim Mindanao.
