The word that most Filipinos use for an attorney or lawyers is abugado, from the Spanish abogado.

A female barrister may be referred to as abugada, from the Spanish abogada.

NOTE: The Philippine Language Commission is currently advocating the Spanish spelling to be the standard Filipino spelling for formal use.

Gender-neutral words in Tagalog:
manananggol (one who defends)
taga-usig (one in charge of prosecuting)
tagapagtanggol (defender)
