In the general sense in English-speaking countries, a solicitor is someone who solicits business orders. In Britain, a solicitor is a lawyer who advises clients on matters of law, draws up legal documents and prepares cases for barristers. In the United States, the solicitor general is the law officer directly below the attorney general in the US Department of Justice, responsible for arguing cases before the US Supreme Court.
