Lotteries have been in existence in the Philippines since 1833, during the Spanish colonial period. It was a way for the Spanish government to raise funds. Our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal won 6,200 pesos in the draw of 1892 during his exile in Dapitan. He donated his winnings to an educational project.
