OSTRICH

The English word can be transliterated into Tagalog as óstrits.

Ostriches are flightless birds that belong to the Struthioniformes order and are part of the ratite family. There are two living species of ostriches:

  1. Common Ostrich (Struthio camelus)
    • Native to sub-Saharan Africa
    • The largest living bird species
    • Males have black and white plumage, while females are gray-brown
  2. Somali Ostrich (Struthio molybdophanes)
    • Native to the Horn of Africa region
    • Can be identified by their blue-grey neck and thighs, pale grey-brown eyes, and darker male plumage
    • Females are similar to female common ostriches except for lighter eyes

The common ostrich is more widespread, while the Somali ostrich is found in the northeast regions of Africa, from Djibouti to Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. Both species are known for their impressive size, powerful legs, and unique characteristics.
