MOYAMOYA

A rare progressive disorder that affects the blood vessels in the brain.

Moyamoya involves the narrowing or occlusion of the carotid artery inside the skull, a major artery that supplies blood to the brain.

The term “moyamoya” is Japanese for “puff of smoke,” which describes the appearance of the abnormal blood vessels in this disease on brain imaging.

When viewed on brain scans like angiograms, the tiny new blood vessels that form to compensate for the narrowed arteries often resemble wispy curls of smoke. This distinctive appearance is what led Japanese doctors who first identified the condition to name it “moyamoya,” meaning “something hazy like a puff of smoke” in Japanese.

The exact causes of moyamoya disease are not fully understood. It’s likely genetic.
