MANTIKILYA

This word is from the Spanish mantequilla (meaning: butter).

mantikilya
butter

mantekilya
butter

For decades, Filipinos had associated butter with margarine (pronounced with a hard g, instead of the “j” sound in English). This is likely from the influence of the Spanish margarina.

tinapay at mantikilya
bread and butter

Pahiran mo ng mantikilya ang tinapay.
Spread butter on the bread.

Popular margarine brands in the Philippines include Star Margarine and Dari Creme. The popular brand of crackers Skyflakes has a sweet crunchy sandwich snack that’s flavored with “sweet mantikilya.”

* The Philippine Language Commission (KWF) currently advocates for the standard spelling to be mantekílya, as it’s closer to the original Spanish.
