KAWASATEG

In precolonial Philippines, the kawasateg was money given to the bride’s close relatives.

If the parents of the groom were affluent the dowry included the following:

1) kawasateg — a sizeable amount of cash distributed to favorite relatives of the bride

2) siwaka — another sizeable amount of cash amounting to a few hundred pesos
