GARTER

1. An elasticized band worn around the leg to hold up a stocking or sock.

2. A suspender strap with a fastener attached to a girdle or belt to hold up a stocking or sock.

3. An elasticized band worn around the arm to keep the sleeve pushed up.

There is a popular children’s game in the Philippines called “Chinese garter.” It uses a length of garter held up by two persons or two poles over which a child can jump in various ways. The higher the garter is held up, the more difficult the jumping over becomes.

When referring to something elastic like that, Filipinos may use the term góma (literally “rubber” but refers to the elasticity of rubber bands and such).
