scientific name: Dugong dugon
Most commonly a dúgong is a herbivorous marine mammal having flipperlike forelimbs and a notched tail.
In the Cordillera region, dugóng are box-shaped cages or baskets that serve as chicken houses for keeping mother hens and chicks safe at night. Each family has at least one dugong because chickens, along with pigs, are the main sacrificial animals in the local religion.
Unrelated to the above, dugong can be a ligated form of the word dugo (meaning: blood).
