DETENTION

This English term can be transliterated into Tagalog as diténsyon.

detensiyón
detention

In the United States, detention is a disciplinary action taken by schools where a student is required to stay after school or during lunch as a consequence for misbehavior or rule violations.

Detention, in a legal context, is when law enforcement temporarily holds someone, limiting their freedom of movement, usually for questioning or investigation. Unlike an arrest, detention is typically shorter and doesn’t necessarily lead to formal charges or booking into jail. While both detention and arrest involve a person being held by authorities, an arrest is more serious, often involving formal charges, and can result in longer-term confinement and a permanent record.
