COMELEAK

Comeleak refers to the massive leak of the personal data of every registered voter of the Philippines. The term is a combination of the English word “leak” and the acronym COMELEC, which stands for the Commission on Elections of the Philippines.

The leak was brought to public attention on March 27, 2016, when a group of hackers called LulzSec Pilipinas posted a link to a 340-gigabyte file that purportedly was the entire COMELEC database.

Included in the data dump were 1.3 million records of overseas Filipino voters with their passport numbers and expiration dates.

Earlier that day, another group called Anonymous Philippines had defaced the COMELEC website with a message that called for tighter security measures on the vote counting machines (VCM) to be used during the 2016 Philippine general election on May 9.

COMELEAK happened under the watch of COMELEC chairman Andres Bautista, against whom charges were being contemplated in early 2017.
