‘AlDub’ is a combination of the names Alden and Yaya Dub.
Alden Richards is a Filipino actor and Yaya Dub is the character played by Maine Mendoza on the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga. Maine Mendoza had earlier become famous through her outstanding skills at lip-synching via Dubsmash.
Alden and Yaya Dub were given the storyline of being what Filipinos call a “love team” on the Kalyeserye segment of the EB television show. They became exceedingly popular from when they started acting on the show in the middle of the year 2015.
Initially, the plot was that two could never meet in person and they only interacted via split-screen. It wasn’t until October 24th that they finally did meet live in person in a large arena filled with 55,000 fans, coinciding with the celebration of Eat Bulaga‘s 36th-year anniversary. The live stream was unofficially fed by local fans to other fans around the world.
On that day, the Twitter hashtag #AlDubEBTamangPanahon was posted in more than 41 million tweets, smashing the previous Twitter record held by Brazil’s 2014 FIFA World Cup defeat to Germany.
Tamang Panahon is a Tagalog phrase meaning “right time.”
When the online search company Google released their list of Top Trending Searches for the year 2015 in mid-December, it revealed that AlDub dominated search trends in the Philippines for the year.
“Simula sa pagkakaibigan, nauwi sa pagiging magkasintahan… at ngayon… sakramento ng kasal.”
