Yoyoy Villame

Born on November 18 in the year 1932, Yoyoy Villame was known as “The Philippine King of Novelty Songs.” He was a singer, composer, lyricist and arranger of unforgettably funny, educational Filipino songs.

Butsekik is the song most associated with Yoyoy Villame; it is all fun and no education.

There’s a story, probably apocryphal, that the Chinese community in the Philippines wanted to take him to court for making fun of their language, but they were foiled in their endeavor because no one could identify a single Chinese word in the song.

His other songs are Philippine Geography (genuinely educational), the Magellan Song (a history lesson) and Hayop na Combo, which is another simply funny song.

The great Yoyoy Villame, who was able to capture in music the essence of Filipino humor, died on May 18, 2007.
