Kuya for men and Ate for women, are used when referring to someone older than oneself or whoever the person is compared to. Nowadays, the word Kuya and Ate is given as a word of respect when talking to someone. In Tagalog, the oldest is referred to as "Panganay" and each sibling is counted off as pangalawa, pangatlo, pang-apat etc. (2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.). The youngest is called "Bunso", which is also used as a term of endearment.
