Among the early Tagalogs, there were two kids of alipin — saguiguilir and the namamahay.
Among the Visayans, the slaves were of three kinds — the tumataban, the tumaranpuk, and the ayuey.
The tumataban worked in the master’s house only when there was feasting or revel to be organized. The tumaranpoc were allowed to live in their own houses, working a day for their master, three for themselves, in most instances substituting rice for labor. The ayuey were the most exploited group.
