Pagtutuli (circumcision) is an important adolescent rite of passage among boys in the Philippines. It is performed on small groups by an adult male who is an expert in the procedure. In the countryside, the boys first bathe in a river and chew on guava leaves before having their foreskins cut. The chewed guava leaves are then applied to the wound, and the boys are told to wear skirts for a few days. If swelling occurs, the penis is said to be kinamatis (root word: kamatis, meaning ‘tomato’).
