To engage in text-dooring is to send a text message to your textdoor neighbor. A text-door neighbor is an individual or entity having a telephone number that is one digit off yours — it could be one number higher or lower.
Memes involving textdooring became prominent in the summer of the year 2019. Large numbers of people started posting on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and other platform accounts of their text-dooring experience, including screenshots of messages they’ve sent, received and/or exchanged with their text-door neighbors, most of whom were total strangers.
The concept of a “textdoor” neighbor has been around since at least 2015. The subreddit url was claimed in January 2016.
Not limited to English speakers, text-dooring is a global phenomenon.
