SIPER

This is a transliteration of the English word “zipper.” Most Filipinos simply use the English word as is.

siper
zipper

In the past, natives of the Philippine Islands found it almost impossible to pronounce the foreign “z” sound. But after centuries of colonial rule, and exposure to mass media from overseas in recent decades, almost everyone can manage the “z” sound and don’t have to fall back on pronouncing it as an “s.”

In fact, the letter “z” has been formally taught as part of the Filipino alphabet in Philippine schools since at least the year 1987.
