The sarimanok is a legendary bird that is a popular symbol in the Muslim art of the southern Philippine islands. It has wings and a feathered tail, and holds a fish in its beak or talons. The bird’s head is profusely decorated with scrolls, leaf and spiral motifs.
In Islamic legend, Muhammad found a rooster in the first of the seven heavens. The bird was so large that its crest touched the second heaven. Whenever it crowed, it could wake every living creature except man. Once the rooster no longer crows, Judgment Day will have arrived.
* The Tagalog word for ‘chicken’ is manok.
