This English term can be transliterated into Tagalog as salutatóryan.
A salutatorian is the student who graduates with the second-highest academic rank in their graduating class, typically determined by GPA and coursework rigor. In the Philippines, it is based on “grades.”
Traditionally, the salutatorian delivers the opening speech at the graduation ceremony, known as the salutation, which welcomes attendees and introduces other speakers. This speech is generally more celebratory and focuses on greeting the audience, while the valedictorian, who ranks first, delivers the closing farewell speech.
