Filipinos have many different words for the “rice” that English speakers refer to using one general term.
The most common words are kanin, palay, bigas, and sinaing.
palay: rice that’s still planted in the fields or still has its golden brown husk on; unhusked rice 🌾
bigas: rice that’s been harvested but hasn’t been cooked yet
sinaing: rice that’s being cooked or has just been cooked
** kanin: cooked rice 🍚
múmo: rice grains left on the plate or on the table
pispis: a synonym for mumo
bahaw: leftover rice or cold rice

tutong: burnt rice, particularly in the bottom of the cooking pot
