Ube Gulaman

Product of Cebu, Philippines…

Use this to make purple-colored Japanese raindrop cake! Add a side of nata de coco.

What is Gulaman? It’s plant-based “jelly.”

Whereas the gelatin that Americans are familiar with is made from animal products, the Philippine gulaman is made from algae-derived agar.

Ube is a popular root crop in the Philippines. It’s been called purple yam in English.

Gulaman with the color and flavor of ube is not very common. One Philippine brand is Zang manufactured by Shireli in Cebu.

You can request samples from the Fil Am Store in Los Angeles. 🙂

The Constitution of the Philippines states that the nation has two official languages -- these are called English and Filipino. Tagalog is the basis of the Filipino language.
