Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag (1975)

Manila in the Claws of Light is a 1975 Filipino drama film directed by Lino Brocka based on the novel In the Claws of Brightness by Edgardo M. Reyes. It is considered by many as one of the greatest films of Filipino cinema.

The movie stars Hilda Koronel, Lou Salvador, Jr., Tommy Abuel, and in his film debut, Bembol Roco (credited as Rafael Roco, Jr.). The cinematography is by Miguel de Leon, who would later become a renowned director himself.

Ang Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag ay isang kathambuhay o nobela na nasa wikang Tagalog at isinulat ng Pilipinong may-akdang si Edgardo M. Reyes noong 1986. Unang lumitaw ang nobelang ito bilang isang serye sa magasing Liwayway mula 1966 hanggang 1967. Ang kuwentong ito ang naging batayan para sa nagantimpalaang pelikulang Pilipinong Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag.

PLOT

Julio, a poor fisherman, goes to Manila to search for his beloved named Ligaya. Sometime before Julio’s trip, Ligaya had left with a lady named Mrs. Cruz in order to study and work in the city.

In Manila, Julio becomes a victim to the city’s bad elements. He experiences abuses while working in a construction site. Eventually, he loses his job and desperately looks for a decent place where he can sleep. Slowly, Julio develops a cynical demeanor as he gradually loses hope of ever finding Ligaya.

Near the end, Julio finds Ligaya, only to learn from her that she is a victim of white slavery. Julio and Ligaya plan to escape.
