MARANG

Scientific name: Artocarpus odoratissima

Marang fruit of the Philippines

The marang is a fruit common in the mountainous regions of the island of Mindanao.

It looks similar to langka (jackfruit) and kamanse (breadfruit), though smaller and softer when compared to the two mentioned fruits.

The marang is delicious and has a favorable scent, particularly when it’s ripe. It can be considered a complete food, with the necessary nutrients for a person’s health. Among these nutrients are protein, fat, carbohydrates, crude fiber, ash, calcium, phosphorus, iron, retinol, beta-carotene, vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and ascorbic acid.

Eating the Marang fruits of the Philippines
This fruit can be eaten fresh as a dessert. It is also perfect for the making of processed desserts or value-added products like ice cream, marang jam, marang syrup, vacuum-fried marang, dehydrated marang, marang puree, marang preserve, marang concentrates and powdered marang.

Because of its short shelf life, the marang is difficult to transport to faraway places.
