Malacañang reminded the public to be extra careful about what they eat or drink after the number of people who died from drinking coconut wine, locally known as lambanog (distilled palm liquor), climbed to 11.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo made the statement after it was reported that at least 300 individuals were rushed to hospitals in Laguna and Quezon provinces after drinking lambanog.

“The Palace expresses alarm over the reported cases of lambanog poisoning in Laguna and Quezon,” Panelo said in his Monday press briefing.

Panelo then reminded the public to only consume food and beverage items registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), especially during the holiday season.

“We remind the public that they should always check whether their alcohol purchases, or any product that they consume for that matter, have been registered or approved by the Food and Drug Administration,” he said.

“Prudence dictates that we should always be mindful of what we ingest, particularly during this time of merrymaking,” he added.

The incident prompted Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez to order a temporary ban on the sale and purchase of lambanog.

In 2018, at least 20 people in Southern Tagalog and Central Luzon were killed after drinking lambanog. According to the FDA, the lambanog brand involved in the recent deaths and hospitalization in Southern Luzon was different from that which caused the casualties last year.

Kuya for men and Ate for women, are used when referring to someone older than oneself or whoever the person is compared to. Nowadays, the word Kuya and Ate is given as a word of respect when talking to someone. In Tagalog, the oldest is referred to as "Panganay" and each sibling is counted off as pangalawa, pangatlo, pang-apat etc. (2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.). The youngest is called "Bunso", which is also used as a term of endearment.
