In the Philippines, kapis refers to the shells used in the construction of traditional windows, lanterns, decorations and handicrafts.

Ang kapis ay isang uri ng kabibi.

Kapis is a type of marine mollusk. The word often refers to the windowpane oyster whose scientific name is Placuna placenta.

Capiz is the name of a province on Panay Island. It is famous for capiz shells.


Both capiz shells and nacre come from mollusks, but capiz shells are specifically from the Placuna placenta and are thinner and more translucent. Nacre is found inside the shells of various mollusks and has a more iridescent and layered appearance.

UCapiz shells are often utilized for crafting decorative items and have a significant cultural and economic role in Capiz Province. Nacre is more commonly used in high-end jewelry and fine decorative arts.
