KALIWAT

Kaliwat is the name of a people’s theater collective based in Davao, Mindanao.

The word Kaliwat is from the Cebuano language, where it means “cousin.”

Cebuano is a language very distinct from Tagalog. Cebuano is NOT a dialect of Tagalog.

The Cebuano language is spoken primarily in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

A similar-looking but unrelated Tagalog word is kaliwa (left, not right).

kaliwa’t kanan
left and right
