Julian Cruz Balmaceda was born in Orion, Bataan. Date of birth: 28th of January, 1885. Death: September 18, 1946. Better known as a playwright (penned “Who are You?”). Wrote “Wound of the Heart” when he was only fourteen years old. Won first place in a competition by the Bureau of Posts, 1928, for his “Ang Piso ni Anita.” Also known as a novelist with daring themes and deft characterization. A poet who loved contests of Tagalog poetry (he won an award for his defense of “Tomorrow” against the “Yesterday” and “Today” of Regalado and Ramos. Also published a few long poems such as “Sa Bayan ni Plaridel,” “Anak ni Eba,” etc. As a critic, author of “The Three Periods of Tagalog Drama” and made several linguistic studies.

Si Julian Cruz Balmaceda ay isinilang sa Udyong, Bataan. Petsa ng kapanganakan: ika-28 ng Enero, 1885. Araw ng kamatayan: Setyembre 18, 1946. Higit na kilala sa pagiging mandudula (may-akda ng “Sino Ba Kayo?”). Sumulat ng “Sugat ng Puso” nang may labing-apat na taong gulang pa lamang. Nagkamit ng unang gantimpala sa patimpalak ng Kawanihan ng Koreo, 1928, sa kanyang “Ang Piso ni Anita.” Kilala ring nobelista na may mga mapangahas na tema at makikinis na paglalarawang-tauhan. Isang makatang mahiligin sa balagtasan (nagkamit ng gantimpala sa kanyang pagtatanggol sa “Bukas” laban sa “Kahapon” at “Ngayon” nina Regalado at Ramos). Nakapagpalimbag din ng ilang tulang mahahaba tulad ng “Sa Bayan ni Plaridel,” “Anak ni Eba,” at iba pa. Bilang kritiko, may-akda ng “Tatlong Panahon ng Dulang Tagalog” at gumawa ng ilang pag-aaral na lingwistika.
