DUWENDE

This word is from the Spanish duende.

duwende
dwarf, elf, goblin

The native Tagalog term is nuno-sa-punso. These creatures are not ordinarily considered monsters.

Duwende get angry when their dwelling places are disturbed. So you have to give them notice that you’re about to pass… by saying, Tabi-tabi po.

It doesn’t matter whether you meant to or didn’t mean to, if you ever step on a mound that happens to be where a dwende lives, he will take his revenge by making you sick.

That’s why you should be careful especially in the Philippine countryside. When you see a mound of dirt, steer clear of it. Dwende also like living under trees or large plants, so don’t mess around there either.
