Duhat is a local Philippine fruit that’s commonly referred to in English as Java plum.
The scientific name of the plant is Syzgium cumini. It is also widely known as lomboy, a non-Tagalog word.
The duhat fruit is oval and about 1 to 2 centimeters in length. It is dark purple to black in color, fleshy and one-seeded, with a sweet-astringent taste.
Filipinos enjoy this tropical fruit with rock salt.
Eating it often leaves a dark violet stain on one’s tongue.

what they call the lomboy in waray?
Here on Palawan, we have the seedless variety of Duhat. If not properly pruned, it becomes a huge tree and harvesting fruits becomes extremely difficult, the fruits will just fall on the ground and rot. To start it, one must graft it of markotte it. The taste is nice, mildly sweet. Perfect fruit to eat for breakfast with rice and some milk.
I imagine it has medicinal properties because everybody says so.
Used to climb and gather some fruits. Too bad I was caught climbing to the top most branch and dad had to cut the tee.
Growing up memories are attached to this fruit, but that’s another story. One of the best ways to enjoy this fruit is to put in a deep dish (already washed-cleaned), sprinkle with some rock salt, cover with another dish and shake lightly enough to barely break the skin.Refrigerate for about an hour or until cold, then, enjoy! We live in Antipolo and our village is lined with duhat and mango trees and an occasional casoy tree. The nut is great but the its fruit is just as good! Slice up into quarters in a deep dish, sprinkle with rock salt and refrigerate. Great eated cold!!!
I am in Manila now (May 2023), a friend introduced me to them, nice. The tree is guarded by vicious red ants, seems like they have a symbiotic relationship.
We call it LOMBOY in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
It does had good health benefits, sadly it was not given importance by many local folks.i had planted some and lots of my neighbors benefitted on it.
lomboy
I have lived in Canada for sometime and every time I eat cherries the taste and texture reminds me of duhat. Are these plants related?
I always thought that lomboy is same as blueberry 😍 maybe they belong to the same family.
We call it Lomboy in Zambal. A dialect of Zambales.

Lomboy
Lomboy gihapon. Lami jud ni labina kung hinog na. Fruit is more fleshy than cherries.
It is good in diabetes.
Truly LOMBOY is not only a delicious fruit but also source of insulin-like effect good for diabetics. In the past, it was known that the bark of Lomboy when boiled in water is a cure for diabetes. The diabetic person will drink the reddish water and blood sugar reading will miraculously drop. An Ayurvedic doctor friend advised me not to use the tree bark as it might be toxic ( animals never use the tree bark for medicine because it is poisonous according to him) using the leaves instead is safe ang just as effective. Just pick 5 younger leaves, add hot water and process it in a blender. Afterwards strain to separate the fibers and drink the green concoction. I have been doing this when my Blood Glucose reading was 150 and up while taking Metformin 1000mg twice daily and 4mg of Glimepiride once a day. Now I only drink the blendered Lomboy leaves in the morning in hot water and I am getting a reading of between 85-100 while eating normal foods. I am no saying that I am cured but I am out of medications that caused kidney disease on me.
I am happy to share this experience to save other people’s lives.
Hi, I live in New Jersey USA and am diabetic. My wife is Pilipina and she was on Facebook and seen this fruit posted on there by a friend and she was saying how much she enjoyed the fruit as a kid when she lived on Cebu, Alcoy.
I read your post and I too take Metformin twice a day, as well as Glipizide twice a day and even Jardiance and my sugars are still going up as I get older, I am 63. I am concerned as well about the liver/kidney negative side effects from the drugs.
I was wondering if it is possible to get the leaves sent to the USA? Do you know of any suppliers of this?
Have a blessed day!
