  1. As the poet Aeschylus, says Πάθει μάθος. Pathei mathos., “Suffering is learning,” from Agamemnon, line 177. Many people had to suffer and die for what we take for granted as general truths, as the play itself is about. In more aphoristic and alliterative Tagalog, perhaps, this could be translated to “Dalumat ay dunong”, i.e it took a lot of pain for us know the slightest. Medicine from eating raw and unknown food that made alchemy an improvement; and as the play itself shows, the Agamemnon being part of a trilogy of the Oresteia, even what we take for granted such as morality, and institutions such as courts took a lot of suffering, literal tragedies upon tragedies to be established, back at a time when murder was considered a right and might and power was law and right…

Epistemologically, in the same manner that concepts and ideas are abstractions, i.e. ignore individual iterations, examples, occurrences and instances of actual things. Recursively, as a second-order mode of thinking, this applies to dalumat itself, how the word itself got divorced from its own older meaning…

  2. Hello po! Good day! May I ask po why the word ‘dalumat’ has an archaic definition, ‘sufferance’, ‘tolerance’, etc.? How is it related to the current meaning po?
