UPDATE: Sayoc was sentenced to 20 years in prison in August 2019.
In the news in the United States on October 26 (Friday) is the name of Cesar Sayoc, who allegedly sent fake bombs to celebrities associated with the Democratic party. The government alleges Sayoc has committed the following crimes: interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents, threatening interstate communications, and assaulting current and former federal officers. He faces up to 48 years behind bars.
How was Sayoc identified by law enforcement as the hoaxer? With a fingerprint on one of the packages he sent. Having committed multiple crimes in his life, Sayoc’s fingerprints were already in the FBI database and were quickly matched.
Interestingly, a van belonging to Sayoc, which law enforcement confiscated, had a sticker of the Seminole flag on it, which quickly prompted the Native American tribe to disavow any connection to the Florida resident. “We can find no evidence that Cesar Altieri, Caesar Altieri, Caesar Altieri Sayoc, Ceasar Altieri Randazzo or Julus Cesar Milan is or was a member or employee of the Seminole Tribe of Florida,” a spokesman said in a statement.
It was subsequently uncovered via the genealogy company Ancestry that Cesar Sayoc is of Asian heritage, with his father Ceasar (spelled as is) being an immigrant from the Philippines. The elder Sayoc became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1970; his wife is of Italian descent with the last name Altieri, first name Madeline.
The Filipino-Italian Sayoc was born a natural American in New York in 1962. He attended a high school in North Miami Beach. He attended Breward College in Breward, North Carolina; he was matriculated for only one year and never graduated. His “hair” appears to be tattooed on the top of his head.
