batalán
bamboo back porch
In the old days, the batalan was an extension to the kitchen. Often facing east, the batalan served as the depository of a water jar, baskets, fuel, and other household objects.
There could be one or two ladders made of baboo or wood — one for the main structure of the house and the other at the batalan. These ladders were used for going up and down the house. At night or when all the occupants of the house were out, the ladders were removed.
