In the latest standardization of equivalents between English and Tagalog words, bakúlaw is used to refer to hominids (gorillas), gibbons and macaques.

As a colloquialism, bakúlaw describes a person who is growing old and ugly. Certain apes have faces that look like those of aged humans.
