ASYENDA

This word is from the Spanish hacienda.

In the Philippines, an hacienda is a large plantation on which peasants work.

The most notorious sugar plantation is the enormous Hacienda Luisita in Central Luzon, owned by the powerful Cojuangco-Aquino families, who have managed to enthrone two presidents to lead the government. Hacienda Luisita is known for peasant uprisings during which protesting farm workers have been shot dead, most notably during the November 2004 Massacre.
