An apprentice is a person who is learning by practical experience under a professional or a worker who is already skilled.

For example, a carpenter’s apprentice.

The fifteen-year-old girl went to work as an apprentice under the tutelage of the city’s best seamstress. (The girl will learn the craft and may eventually be able to work as a professional seamstress on her own.)
