The lime being referred to by this word is the white caustic alkaline substance consisting of calcium oxide, obtained by heating limestone. It is usually available in powder form.

Experienced cockfighters in the Philippines use apog (agricultural-grade lime, not industrial lime) to disinfect the soil where their cocks live. The lime is believed to be effective in getting rid of worms and other soil parasites that can be harmful to the health of chickens.

Apog is also an ingredient combined with betel nut to make hitso for chewing.

The word inapog is very obscure. It can refer to how embers turn white and powdery from a fire. To say “inapog sa kahihintay” sort of means to have turned to rotten dust because of the length of time involved in waiting. Think of a mummy from thousands of years ago — how dehydrated and dusty it is when discovered in an ancient crypt.

Visayans do still occasionally use this word due to its familiarity from certain Bible translations of the Book of Psalms. The word inapog hasn’t been seen in written Tagalog texts since 1919.

The common Filipino expression these days is inamag sa kahihintay (turned to mold while waiting).
