The Filipino national bird is the Philippine Eagle (scientific name: Pithecophaga jefferyi). It was the symbol of the Southeast Asian Games in 2005 when they were held in the Philippines.
The Philippine eagle is also known as the monkey-eating eagle and as Haribon.

Conservationists estimate there are only 400 pairs of Philippine eagles left in the wild. It is the largest of the hundreds of birds found in the Philippines today. Standing over three feet tall, with a wingspan of almost eight feet, the eagle is the official symbol of the Republic of the Philippines.
The native Tagalog word for “eagle” is banoy, though very few Filipinos these days recognize it.
